24-hour Ergathon: 2019 Edition
We are incredibly thrilled to announce that we raised £1092 for Maggie’s Fife.
Among the socials and the Give-it-a-Go sessions during Freshers’ Week, the Boat Club set out to make a more memorable contribution to the Fife community. Organised by Development Officer, Sam Winton, we hosted an incredibly successful 24-hour Ergathon.
All members of UStABC were involved as every athlete took it in turns of half an hour slots to ensure that we rowed from midday on Friday 13th until noon on the 14th. Meanwhile, other members encouraged the rowers and informed the public about the importance of donating to Maggie’s.
As well as raising over one thousand pounds, we were excited to see so many people showing their support. Local MP, Stephen Gethins, did so by hopping on the erg. Similarly, many young children and adults, wished to get involved too.
We have worked with Maggie’s for the last couple of years; having hosted the Ergathon before. The charity was established in 1996 in Edinburgh, after Maggie Keswick Jencks, was told she only had three months to live. Maggie’s offers a programme of support aimed at strengthening the physical and emotional wellbeing of those diagnosed with cancer, as well as the affected family and friends. Since its creation, Maggie’s has received over 200,000 visits and supported 45,000 people newly affected by cancer.
We would like to thank everyone who donated and showed their support over the 24 hours. As well as working with Maggie’s, we are also partnered with the Scottish Association for Mental Health; as we hope to continue making a contribution to our local community.
